The trim should be something to look forward to!
Horses that refuse to pick up their feet. They pull or step away, kick out with their hind legs, or lean all their weight onto you. Hoof lifting, holding, or trimming is a 3-6 weekly struggle for so many owners. The difference between picking feet with you (if that even possible) and a full trim with someone else is simply too big.
How do you approach this without postponing the trim indefinitely? How do you ensure things keep improving, making the entire hoof care process something enjoyable for everyone involved?
This uncooperative behavior often stems from tension or discomfort. Your horse may have had negative experiences with previous trimmers or tools, feel unsafe due to circumstances (herd dynamics, weather, location), or simply struggle with touch and restraint.
Furthermore, there can be physical causes, such as sensitivity from thin soles, an old injury, laminitis, or an abscess. Even minor discomfort can make hoof handling unpleasant.
Cooperative care
We’ll teach your horse how to participate in the trimming process in a way that they can enjoy. For example with start button behaviours!
Horse friendly training
Reward based training with R+ and freedom of choice is a clear, safe and ethical way to train your horse essential hoof care behaviours.
Sustainable results
No tricks or quick fixes, but a structured plan that guarantees your safety and your horse’s well-being in the short term and long term.

Trimming and Training: the 6-month program
Trimming a horse that doesn’t want to be trimmed is unpleasant for everybody involved. The owner feels responsible and guilty, the horse feels forced of fearful and the trimmer can’t do their job properly. They might even feel unsafe.
I’ve always had lots of clients approach me with trimming training troubles and have now developed a program that focuses on resolving those. Foundation behaviours like standing still or picking up feet, advanced training concepts like duration or guided movement, systematic desensitization and counter conditioning protocols for strange sounds, smells, objects or people: anything that could be relevant for your horse will get the attention it needs.
First we draw up a plan
Together you’ll look at your personal trimming struggles and goals to see what would be best to focus on first – and how exactly. Do you need a better foundation, or new exercises?
Learning from others
Every other week, you can have your own training analyzed, send in questions, or observe others’ sessions. Inspiration, confidence boosts, and community are vital to your progress.
Doing the same d*mn thing…
We won’t do the same things and expect different results. I check in weekly so I can cheer you on or steer you in a better direction.
Everything available all the time
No need to download an app; you’ll find everything in your member section of the site. Why reinvent the wheel when it’s right at your fingertips?
Continuous support
You can share all your questions and thoughts with me between check-ins, meetings, or appointments so you don’t have to wait.
Online 1-on‑1 coaching
One-on-one online coaching replaces in-person sessions, so you can get tailored support regardless of location.
“It had reached a point where it became increasingly unsafe for the farrier to do his job. Under Janneke’s guidance, we practiced all the separate components of trimming, starting from a place of calmness and relaxation. Taking small steps, we made continuous progress. Janneke gave me the confidence that things would improve, supported me through every step of the process, and eventually integrated the farrier into her training method as well. Now, Rezz allows her feet to be trimmed while loose and free to walk away at any moment, without showing any sign of stress.“
– Linda and Rezz
R+ hoof care: a structured approach
We demand a great deal from our horses during a trim. They surrender their primary means of flight and defense, must adjust to new people, scents, objects, or noises, and strive to maintain their balance and patience – all simultaneously, and much more!
Trimming and Training focuses on every possible aspect of hoof care using Positive Reinforcement. The relevance of each aspect is of course different for every single horse. Some horses are trimmed by their owner and don’t need to adjust to a stranger. Other horses can be trimmed close to the herd, so separation anxiety isn’t causing issues. But this doesn’t go for everyone.
That is why you and me will work together to determine which aspects, behaviors, exercises, and criteria are essential for your process. This ensures you receive a customized training plan for both the short and long term.
Psst! You can also host a workshop!
Would you rather train with a group or organize an event? Then make sure to request the information brochure for the “Trimming and training” workshop here.

“My second horse had a truly awful experience with another trimmer: he received a harsh blow to his belly, and since then, no one can get near his hooves! Working with Janneke has given me more confidence in lifting my horse’s feet. More importantly, we can now handle all four hooves by working slowly, trusting my horse’s signals, and rewarding him.”

Who will you be learning from?
I have been navigating through the horse world for over 25 years; the last 10 years as an independent entrepreneur.
From competitive to alternative, and from traditional clicker training to positive reinforcement with freedom of choice
From being very skeptical about food rewards to curious about how horses truly learn
From feeling I might not be the right person for my horse, to building a powerful, equal partnership
With a traditional equine management and ORUN diploma in hand, I continued learning independently when specialist programs weren’t available.
I’ve learned from experts like Frans de Waal, Jane Goodall, Bob Bailey, Mustang Camp, Shawna Karrasch, Inge Teblick, Conrad Pruijssen, Fairhorsemanship, Hannah Dawson, Machteld van Dierendonck, Eva Meijer, Rachäel Draaisma, and many others.
I became a teacher and trained trainers and instructors at Zarica Teaching Academy and ClickerAcademie.
Now that Force Free is finally gaining recognition, my mission is to help people and horses beyond the R+ hype.
Bringing reward-based techniques to life and supports people when circumstances are challenging; offering an honest, realistic approach that works for everyone involved.
Standing by the belief that the horse is always right, has the right to remove itself from a situation, and deserves time to heal emotionally and physically.
Balancing taking the feelings of horse and human seriously while maintaining enough humor, rest, and optimism herself. It can be a challenge – after all, I’m human too – but it’s an essential part of the learning journey.

FAQ
Do I need a lot of experience?
“Advanced training is just the basics done really, really, really well.” – Ken Ramirez
Whether you’re advanced or just starting; the focus of this training program is establishing or strengthening your training foundation. No exercise is unimportant and no question is silly. And everyone can learn from each other. You don’t need prior experience to join and make progress.
What if I don’t have much time?
At the start of the program, you and I create a plan that fits you and your horse, and your schedule too! You can achieve surprising results with regular, short training sessions. The program is designed to be accessible and less time- and energy-consuming than what you may be used to. Your training should energize you, not drain you.
Can I pay in installments?
Yes, this training program can be paid in 1, 2, or 3 instalments.
How long is a session?
Both online and in-person sessions last 45 minutes.
What if I don’t like filming?
To give the best guidance, it’s important for me to see the session with my own eyes, but if you don’t want or can’t film every session, that’s okay. Regular written updates between lessons (and occasional videos) are also possible.
How do I receive all info and materials?
Short updates, schedules, and practical info are sent via email or WhatsApp/Signal, including instructions to access the Online Workspace. Skill cards and certificates you earn will be mailed to your address.
When do the Clickability Group Calls take place?
Group calls rotate on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. Every other week at 7:30 pm, so everyone gets a chance to attend.
What if I miss out on a Clickability Group Call?
No worries! All meetings are recorded so you can watch the replay later. You’re welcome to submit questions and videos in advance if that’s easier. You can watch my feedback in your own time.
What if I decide to stop after a few months?
Of course, you might stop for any reason. But remember, you’re taking a spot in a limited-capacity program with access to personal coaching, group sessions, and materials. That’s why there’s no refund for early withdrawal.
You’re always welcome to talk with me about any concerns. In some cases, a pause or adjusted listening may be possible.
What if my horse gets injured?
This will definitely affect the plan we created, but it doesn’t mean you have to stop completely. We can try to adapt the plan and in some cases pause the program temporarily.
